Maranta Leuconeura "Erythroneura"
A tropical plant belonging to Brazil, Maranta Red prayer plant is a well-known and gorgeous houseplant. Its scientific name is called Maranta, and its variety is ‘Erythroneura,’ meaning red veins in Latin. The red prayer plant (or herringbone plant) has dark green leaves with white or light green running down the spine. The arching veins come in several shades of red. The tiny flowers are light lavender and it grows six to eight inches tall.
It creates a complete ground cover in warm areas, while in colder areas, it works best as a hanging indoor houseplant. Its stunning foliage is broadly oval and contains about 5-inch (12.5 cm.) long beautifully olive-green leaves featuring vivid red midribs veining in the herringbone design.
Basic Care
Maranta Red Prayer plant likes to live in a space that provides consistently warm temperatures (60° degrees Fahrenheit to 70° degrees Fahrenheit) and ample bright indirect light. Protect the plant against harsh, direct sunlight because this can cause leaf scorch and may even kill your plant. These plants are winter hardy in USDA hardiness zones 11 and higher. Temperatures lower than 60° degrees Fahrenheit can damage your plants’ leaves.
Always use rainwater, distilled or filtered water, or bottled water at room temperature to water Herringbone Plant. Maranta cannot tolerate the chemicals like chlorine found in tap water, and extremes of temperature can shock the roots. Red vein is a thirsty plant, so you should keep the soil slightly moist – never soggy! Water thoroughly whenever the top couple of inches of the soil feels dry. Allow the water to drain through the substrate thoroughly. Never allow your plant to sit in water as this will lead to root rot. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
NOTE: To prevent brown tips on the leaves and enhance beauty; provide humidity. Ie., humidifier, pebble tray, mist twice daily, or your choice of providing humidity.
